Structure

The IUCN Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group has over 50 experts with a diverse range of expertise and experience in the following wild cattle and buffalo range states: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

Working Groups

The Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group comprises of seven Working Groups:

1. Dwarf Buffalo Working Group

Species: Lowland Anoa (Bubalus depressicornis), Mountain Anoa (Bubalus quarlesi) and Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis)
Coordinator: James Burton

2. Large Bovini Working Group

Species: Banteng (Bos javanicus), Gaur (Bos gaurus), Kouprey (Bos sauveli), Yak (Bos mutus), and Water Buffalo (Bubalus arnee)
Coordinator: Simon Hedges

3. Saola Working Group

4. Action Planning Working Group

  • To ensure prioritisation of conservation efforts to deliver the greatest benefit for Asian Wild Cattle and Buffaloes and their habitats.
  • To work with range states to facilitate the planning process.

Coordinator: James Burton 

5. Ecology, Habitat & Population Monitoring Working Group

  • To provide input to design, training and implementation of population status monitoring, to provide high quality data for conservation managers.
  • To engage in species ecology and habitat surveys, to provide high quality data for conservation managers

6. Population Structure and Taxonomy Working Group (Genetics and Morphology)

  • To advance genetic/ morphological research and answer important taxonomic and population structure questions to benefit conservation efforts.
  • To ensure that benefits, including capacity building, are gained for range countries collaborating on large scale international projects.

7. Captive Breeding Working Group

  • To engage and coordinate collaboration between zoos internationally and in range countries to share best practise methods and enhance ex situ conservation.
  • To build strong links between ex situ institutions and in situ projects.
