OverviewThe IUCN Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group consists of more than 40 experts from a diverse range of specialities in the following wild cattle and buffalo range states: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. Current members. The AWCSG was established in the early 1980s. The focus of efforts of the group members is to conserve the nine Asian wild cattle species and their habitats. The methods used include information dissemination, and field, lab and zoo based research to develop practical management solutions. AWCSG StructureThe Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group comprises three Working Groups relating to geographic distribution and taxonomic divisions. These are: Dwarf Buffalo Working Group Species: Lowland Anoa (Bubalus depressicornis), Mountain Anoa (Bubalus quarlesi) and Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis) Large Bovini Working Group Species: Banteng (Bos javanicus), Gaur (Bos gaurus), Kouprey (Bos sauveli), Yak (Bos mutus), and Water Buffalo (Bubalus arnee) Saola Working Group Species: Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) The following can be contacted regarding the status of Asian wild cattle species in the context of the IUCN Red List: William Duckworth, Simon Hedges and James Burton |
