AWCSG Structure and Members

The Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group comprises three Working Groups relating to geographic distribution and taxonomic divisions. These are:

    Dwarf Buffalo Working Group
    Species:
    Mountain Anoa (Bubalus quarlesi),
    Lowland Anoa (Bubalus depressicornis), and
    Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis)

    Large Bovini Working Group

    Species:
    Banteng (Bos javanicus),
    Gaur (Bos gaurus),
    Kouprey (Bos sauveli),
    Yak (Bos mutus), and
    Water Buffalo (Bubalus arnee)

    Saola Working Group

    Species:
    Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis)

    Coordinator: Bill Robichaud

The group consists of more than 30 experts from a diverse range of fields in the following wild cattle and buffalo range states: Indonesia, Philippines, Lao PDR, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia; as well as the following non-range countries. List of current members.

The AWCSG was established in the early 1980s. The focus of efforts of the group members is to conserve biological diversity, not just the 9 Asian wild cattle species, but also their habitats. The methods used include information dissemination, and field, lab and zoo based research to develop practical management solutions.
