Coordinator: James Burton
This working group is focused on the conservation of dwarf buffalo from the Island of Sulawesi in Indonesia (and off-shore islands) and Mindoro Island in the Philippines.
Information collected during a PhD on the ecology of the Lowland Anoa has been disseminated to the Indonesian Forestry Department and local authorities.
The uncertain taxonomic status of the Lowland and Mountain Anoa is under assessment with genetic research being conducted on both species. As part of this study the genetic diversity of the European and Indonesian zoo anoa population is being assessed.
In September 2005, an Indonesian NGO, The Anoa and Babirusa Working Group, facilitated an international meeting to highlight and discuss conservation issues concerning the Anoa.
The genetic diversity study of Anoa will be completed in 2006-07 and published in 2008. Distribution and abundance surveys for Tamaraw are to be completed in F. B. Harrison Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary, Mt. Halcon, and Bansud-Bongabong-Mansalay Nature Reserves on Mindoro Island by Josefina de Leon.
