The IUCN is currently conducting the Global Mammal Assessment (GMA). This is a review of the status of all species of mammals (almost 5,000 described species), focusing on mapping geographic distributions, assessing the degree of threat, and recording essential habitats and important threats for each species. The GMA's main objectives are:
To produce an overall assessment of conservation status, distribution and trends of all known mammal species.
To increase the capacity of the SSC's network on mammals so that the Global Mammal Assessment can be constantly updated, and expertise can be targeted to address the highest conservation priorities.
To find out more please see: http://www.iucn.org/en/projects/global_mamals.htm
The GMA data in currently in text and map (historical and recent distribution) format for each species. Experts on these species, including Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group members are asked to input to these assessments.
The deadline for completion is the end of April.
Thanks to those who have already kindly edited these documents and maps. We look forward to receiving more comments in the coming months.
