Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis)

Physical characteristics

Tamaraw have short legs, they weigh 220-300kg and stand ~1m at the shoulder.10 Their head-body length is ~2.2m and their horns are ~51cm forming a ‘V’ shape.5,10,11 The calves generally appear reddish brown in colour until the age of around 5 years in which they take on adult colourations of dark brown to gray/black.7

Life history 

  • Longevity: 18–20 years.5
  • Gestation: Males and females generally only associate for mating. The gestation period lasts between 276–315 days and young are born in June through November to coincide with the rainy season.5
