Tamaraw
Bubalus mindorensis
IUCN status: Critically Endangered
Threats: habitat loss, illegal hunting
Size: Body mass: 200-274 kg; height at shoulder: 1.05 m; head and body length: 2.2 m
This dwarf buffalo species is found only on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. It was once widespread across the island, however illegal hunting and habitat loss means it is now restricted to several small populations in a handful of locations. The tamaraw is at extremely high risk of extinction, with the total population likely numbering no more than 580 individuals.
The tamaraw is the only wild cattle species found in the Philippine archipelago and is the largest land mammal of the country. This iconic and emblematic species was declared the ‘national land animal’ of the Philippines in December 2017.
