Conservation Planning for Asian Wild Cattle

Introduction

The AWCSG believes that participatory Conservation Planning Workshops are vital way to agree priority actions. Representatives of governments, universities and research institutes, NGOs and other conservation organisations come together to assess the status of these species and to discuss how threats to their survival might be reduced. A comprehensive series of conservation actions are identified and endorsed by workshop participants for inclusion in a Conservation Strategy or Action Plan.

These workshops are conducted at the Regional as well as the National level. Regional workshops help ensure that populations and actions are prioritized across multiple range states, and National workshops allow a representative range of stakeholders from each country to plan more detailed national level actions.

The Strategic Conservation Planning Process

This process has been developed by the IUCN SSC Species Conservation Planning Task Force. Further information is available at:

1. Regional Planning

South-east Asia (June 2008)

A Regional Strategic Conservation Planning Workshop for wild cattle and buffaloesin Southeast Asia was held in Tam Dao National Park in Vietnam in June 9-13, 2008. The meeting's 40 participants, that included government and NGO representatives and species specialists from over 14 countries, provided input to create the IUCN Regional Conservation Strategy for Wild Cattle and Buffaloes in South-east Asia, 2011 to 2020.

South Asia (June 2011)

A two-day South Asia regional Planning Workshop was held at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, in June 28-29, 2011. These are the minutes of what the 22 Indian researchers, scientists, managers, and conservationists from the government, academic, and non-government sectors discussed.

2. National Planning

Vietnam (June 2008)

National Planning Workshop was held for right after the Southeast Asia regional workshop.

Indonesia (May 2009)

Two workshops were held, one for the Banteng and one for the Anoa (combined with the Babyirusa due to their similar distribution). Over 100 delegates, >90% of whom were from Indonesia, attended the workshops.
